Energy Efficient and Sustainable Practices in Building Sector
Sustainable building practices have been at the core of my academic and professional practice beginning with Bachelors in Facilities & Services Planning which made me aware of the critical role of building services namely Mechanical, Electrical and Plumbing in the sustainability of a building.
Subsequent work experience motivated me to further pursue Master of Building Science and Technology at Jain University, Bangalore. The subject was oriented to give comprehensive knowledge about the physical phenomena of the building with respect to its microenvironment, including the areas such as green building materials, building envelope, HVAC, Indoor environment quality, passive design strategies, fire protection, renewable energy systems for building, Concepts of Life Cycle analysis and Carbon footprints of buildings etc.
Prior to joining the Master’s program at Jain University, I worked for 1.6 years for an MEP consultancy in Hyderabad and 3 months in Doha, Qatar. My experience as ‘MEP coordinator’ gave me working knowledge of various building services and helped me understand the various challenges in the implementation of sustainable technologies in building construction. The experience has driven me to write a research paper and an article in the field of sustainable development.
To further pursue my research interests in sustainable building construction, I joined my alumnus – School of Architecture and Planning, JNAFAU as a faculty member in 2016. This equipped me with the time and resources to explore areas such as sustainability, energy efficiency and LCA. I have been handling subjects related to energy management, Green buildings, Climatology and Design Studio. I have been actively participating in various workshops and presenting papers at regular intervals. Additionally, I am IGBC certified Accredited Professional and Certified Energy Conservation Building Code Expert.
