The Institution initially founded in the year 1940 as Department of Architecture in the erstwhile Nizam college of Fine Arts and Architecture, became the Govt. College of Fine Arts and Architecture in 1956 following the formation of the state of Andhra Pradesh. Subsequent to the formation of JNTU (Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University) in 1972, the college was merged into it. The College of Fine Arts and Architecture became one of the four constituent colleges of the University. In 1989, the college was bifurcated to form the School of Planning and Architecture and is since then a constituent Institution of the School of Excellence envisaged by Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University.
The School through its time-established credentials has a long-term commitment in the areas of education and advancement of the disciplines of architecture and planning and believes in the common vision of Excellence in education as its underlying objective.The School has highly qualified and experienced faculty specializing in Architecture, Housing, Urban and Regional Planning, Landscape Architecture, Environmental Design, Urban Design, Conservation, Structural Engineering. Through the rigor of their pursuits, breadth of interests, and commitments to teaching, the faculty develops students who actively engage and resourcefully address emerging design issues.
Many Architecture and Planning projects have been undertaken and supervised by the school under its consultancy services. The School of Planning and Architecture also offers postgraduate courses in Urban & Regional Planning, Environmental Design and Interior Design.
Though its Continuing education programs and active Quality improvement Cell, the school assumes a greater role to play in the society by extending education and training to the needy.

As an active constituent of the varied SPA of Excellence envisaged by JNTU, the School shares a common broader vision of School of Planning and Architecture principally aims at fostering intellectual enterprise through its diverse activities in the areas of Education, Research, Training and Consultancy and with an enduring commitment to Excellence, seeks to become a major resource center in the region in Architecture and allied disciplines.
